Making Fruit Fun!

If you want your child to gobble up a dessert that is both healthy and inviting, try making pastry fruit cups. I usually use pre-made pastry shells, the individual ones – which can be ordered online or purchased directly from a bakery.

I make vanilla pudding and place a dollop of pudding in each cup. Then I add an assortment of fruits: strawberries, kiwi, raspberries, grapes, bananas, etc. I use the juice from a small can of canned peaches to paint a glaze on the top of the fruit.

These little cups of fruit look so colorful and fun that kids can’t resist them! It’s a great way to get a variety of fruit choices into one recipe thereby optimizing the chance that a child’s food palate is getting further developed! Enjoy!

Mommy Time (or Daddy Time) and Me Time!

Mommy Time (or Daddy Time) and Me Time!

One of the first things I realized about instant parenthood was how little time I had left to do the necessary things required for daily living. You know, those fun things like paying bills, doing the laundry, answering mail, making needed phone calls, etc. etc. Our little ones need us and we feel guilty about not spending quality time with them. But what to do? The dishes still need to get done and the clothes don’t wash themselves and nobody is going to pay our bills for us. All these tasks need time and some form of concentration.

Easy Tips and Tricks for Fussy, Finicky Eaters

Be patient! Children have sensitive paletes; meaning they have not yet developed the ability to accurately process whether or not the food in their mouth is something they COULD enjoy.

  1. Start slowly! Introduce one or two new foods a week. Eating 3 green beans is better than eating no green beans.

  2. Use the EAT AROUND THE CLOCK KIT - including the children’s book, the plate and the timer to optimize the success of your endeavor.

  3. Make it more fun and exciting by using the “preferred food concept” as outlined in the EAT AROUND THE CLOCK program. This will provide the incentive children need to try even a small bit of the new food being introduced!

  4. Don’t give up! There is a saying, “persist longer than they resist!” Rome wasn’t built in a day and healthy eating habits develop over time. Don’t get discouraged! A child needs anywhere from 7 to 12 exposures to a particular food to cultivate a taste for that food.

Did you ever notice how great cook’s and fancy restaurants make the food look so good on the plate? It almost appears to be a work of art. Once I tried to replicate something I saw in a restaurant and while it was painstaking (probably because I am no chef and did not have the right tools), it looked lovely on the plate.

So you are running out the door to meet with your friend and have a nice lunch somewhere quiet so that you can reconnect. The kids are going with you. They are excited to get out and have lots of energy. You can’t wait to sit with your friend and have some real adult conversation. But guess what? Your kids still want and need your attention. That isn’t going to stop just because you are at Chez Cucina!
